But regardless of that whichever you choose, the trip and common factor will mean either staying in or driving through Te Anau the gateway to both Milford or Doubtful Sound. So lets take a look at them one at a time so that you can identify the differences. Doubtful Sound is about 300 percent bigger than Milford Sound and therefore has more to see. The overnight trip is essential to see all it offers. The actual journey is about 2 and a half hours from Queenstown to Te Anau and there is a further 30 minute drive from there to Doubtful Sound.Staying overnight gives you the opportunity of other activities. A Te Anau highlight is the glow worm caves. If you are among the few you may also see dolphins or fur seals in your travels to Doubtful Sound. Even though there is some travelling to get there Doubtful means less people and more nature to see. The cost per person is about NZ $250 depending what time of the year you visit. If this is not your cup of tea, the alternative of course is Milford Sound. Many locals believe this is the preferred place to see and is a fantastic place to visit. The views along the way are more exciting than Doubtful Sound, however thats debatable because remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.On your way to Milford Sound you will drive through the forests of Fiordland National Park in all its glory. You should allow more time to get there. Its already about 3 hours drive from Te Anau to Milford. This will suit the trampers [walkers] because it will give them a break from the trip. There are many walks available with wondrous waterfalls that are second to none in the world. Theres a 90 minute boat trip on Milford Sound and you can expect an additional cost of around NZ $75 depending on season. You also get the added bonus of seeing some of the wildlife in the area.Both Milford and doubtful sounds are truly fantastic and even though Doubtful is said to be the better overnight trip many locals believe Milford Sound is the preferred place to see and visit. If you dont have that much time any of the excursions offered will assuredly deliver you a true feel for the flora and fauna in the Fiordland National Park.There are numerous tour groups that offer these trips from Queenstown available during peak and off-peak seasons.
