Sintra is a small Portugese city, very charming and attractive for its obvious connection with the past. In his novel about Childe Harold, George Byron described the city of Sintra and its romantic atmosphere as a glorious heaven . In 1995, the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. While being in Lisbon suburbs, you simply have to visit Sintra. This is an old Moorish city which in 1147 was conquered by the Portuguese king Alfonso I and for more than 600 years it was the summer residence for Spanish kings. Nowadays Sintra is a popular travel destination, not only because of its mild temperate climate, but also because of its picturesque location by the Serra de Sintra coastal mountains which raise above the city. However, what attract tourists most are the citys historic places. There are lots of well-preserved castles and palaces found in Sintra. All of them offer their important historic and artistic collections, which attract lots of Portuguese and foreign artists to the city. Sintras landscape is full of green forests, exotic flowers and refined palaces. The symbol of the city is its National Palace which in the 15th century was the summer residence for kings. The palace has huge white conical flue towers that rise above the palace kitchen and are seen from a distance. This is one of the most vivid examples of Portuguese royal architecture. The palace is adorned with wooden carving. There are also ceramic tiles on its walls (called azulejos) that were brought to Portugal by the Arabs. The most outstanding example of the citys unique architecture is its Pena Palace. Built in the 19th century, the palace blends several styles. It is a fabulous fairytale castle which stands on the south-western side of the mountain ridge and is surrounded by a huge garden. Lots of other attractions can be seen from here, including ruins of Castelo dos Mouros fort built in the 8th century a mighty stronghold erected by the Arabs to defend the place from Christian forces. Among the other Sintra attractions are - wine-making industry, its marble, traditional cakes and other dishes, souvenirs. Sintra has everything you need for a good rest: golden sand, clean Atlantic water, magnificent coast and rich opportunities for surfing and fishing. The citys mild and damp climate favours the impetuous growth of its greenery . Lots of plants, rare even for Portugal, can be seen here. This is a real green heaven with healthy mountain air.
