It is obvious that Apple is changing the look of iOS while trying to maintain the existing feel, with some enhancements. The real question is - what do these changes portend for how computing is going to change?SDIs strategic positioning in Silicon Valley gives us a birds eye view of the horizon. Previous shifts in iOS have moved us from mere mobile phones to the world of mobile computing. Similarly, Apple iOS7 is heralding a shift from mere mobile computing to pervasive computing where billions of objects in our world will be smart & connected to each other. In SDIs opinion, the smart & connected objects in the world of pervasive computing will need a display/controller capable of managing their operations & data feeds. Apple iOS7 is setting itself up to be squarely positioned in the center of this revolution. The key shifts in Apple iOS7 that enable this revolution are what we would like to highlight below.Previous versions of iOS were trying to simulate real world objects on a 2-D screen such as trying to make the Notepad app look like a legal pad, or the calendar app look like a traditional leather book. This kind of rendering is now passe. The new look renders these apps flat on the screen in a more utilitarian fashion. This design can accommodate far more information - increasingly necessary as Big Data floods the internet at an ever escalating rate.iOS in the Car is another vivid instance of this coming revolution. The iOS7 has been integrated into some car dashboards and rendered in a manner suitable to driving needs. Now you can connect your iPhone to the dashboard and safely use the mobile phone while controlling the car using iOS in the Car. The iPhone has just transformed the car into a mobile computer on wheels! This analogy can be extended to any machinery, or even any object, as they could all eventually embed iOS and enable communications and management from one device that rules them all.The new Control Center in Apple iOS7 is an excellent consolidation of notifications/updates from various apps. As a realtime dashboard for your everyday life it gives an intuitive way to skim the flood of information. The design is geared towards scalability to manage the increased flow of information generated by embedded, pervasive computing. The App Store itself is now location sensitive. It can show you apps that are relevant to where you are located. If you are walking near the White House, it will show you apps about tour companies nearby. This will surpass the simple directory/review capabilities of sites like Yelp, and create opportunities for the next generation of Customer Engagement. As apps proliferate to match this shift to pervasive computing, the App Store will evolve to becoming more dynamic. For example, in a factory it could download the right app based on which machine you are walking by. Or in a car rental lot it could download the right app for the car you are opening up.In short, from merely being a mobile computer, the iPhone is evolving into your Life Controller.
