At one time or another, if you are at all serious about running or cross-training, you have probably used a device that combined not only a watch function, but also gave you your heart readout and maybe a distance, too, but the Garmin Forerunner 405 Wireless GPS-Enabled Sport Watch with USB ANT Stick and Heart Rate Monitor has taken this up a few notches.Looking for all the world like a stylish sports watch, the Garmin Sport Watch is a lot more than that. Of course, it would have to be since its manufacturer is one of the premier independent GPS suppliers on the market. The Sport Watch, though, amps things up by not only giving you the usual time and date and, if you have the software running, your heart rate, but they have added a technology they call ANT + Sport.Since they are already an over-the-air product as they take their map information direction from the universe of low-earth orbiting satellites that were placed in polar orbits by the military in the 1980s and 1990s and opened to the public late in the 1990s, which effectively makes them radio transceivers, rather than just standard WiFi devices, what is to stop them from adding a compatible antenna to your PC, loading some software and having your watch speak directly to your PC and their worldwide network? Nothing is to prevent it and it is really an enhancement as is the watch itself.Looking for all the world like a standard black-wrist-strapped digital watch, the Sports Watch is much more. A simple tap of the bezel - there are no clunky buttons to press - and you not only have your GPS location time and date, but you can also have the mileage you have run and by pushing the bezel again, you can quickly send it to your PC where the USB antenna piece of the ANT + Sport technology picks up the signal and records it there. Further, though, it is recorded in Garmin's only database so that you can compare your work with others in your group or who you know are working the same muscles.Indeed, you can find out that if your performance in one area is not as good as other performances are on the Garmin data network, you learn the areas you have to enhance for your training. One more key to this technology is that it will also monitor your heart rate, if you ask it, so that you can record that vital statistic to see if you are making progress not only with your cardio but also with your distance work. This is quite an advance in over-the-air technology and one which is worth it if you are training for the spring Marathon season ahead. Even if you are not and are just generally training for conditioning, you can gain a great deal of information from that collected by the Garmin Sport Watch.
