Two years however is a longtime when it comes to technology, and the landscape that the researchers lookedat back then has changed a lot. Badoo has worked very hard to increase transparencyabout how user data is dealt with, and has implemented a brand new privacypolicy in plain, easy-to-read English. With this in mind, one of the leadresearchers in the Cambridge study, Sören Preibusch was invited, to meet theBadoo team and talk about what had improved, as well as future steps can betaken e to make the Badoo users experience even better, safer and moretransparent.Sören explained that therewere actually some aspects of the original study in which Badoo did very well;In 2009, Badoo was one of the very few social networks to maintain amachine-readable (P3P) policy. In 2012, the site continues to provide a P3Ppolicy, whilst other well-known Web companies are trying to bypass thisstandard mechanism to communicate cookie and data collection practices.Mr Preibusch is a Germanresearcher based at the University of Cambridge who has been involved withprivacy research for over six years, focusing on technical and economic aspectsof privacy negotiations, online social networking, and the mobile Web. He hascontributed to privacy and social networking themes within the World Wide WebConsortium, and his publications give an account of the supply and demand fordata protection on the social Web and in electronic business. When meeting with Badoo, wayswere discussed to further help site members to control their personalinformation, such as instructional videos, said Sören. Badoo have overhauledtheir privacy policy to make it easier to read. A section on users rights hasbeen added, where it is explained how users can delete their profiles and havetheir data removed. Two new privacy features areabout to be launched by Badoo which will give users greater control over theirinformation.
