First 3D movies, then 3D TVs, and now 3D smartphones. Sprint has announced they will release their 3D-enabled HTC Evo smartphone on June 24. The phone's 3D feature will not require special 3D glasses or other equipment. So how does the phone produce 3D graphics without classes? They key to 3D is a series of layers in front of the display that produce very small slits through which your two eyes view a separate set of pixels. In order to see the stereoscopic (3D) image, however, you must be positioned directly in front of the display; at any other angle the image becomes distorted and unclear.Although the phone will come preloaded with Blockbuster on Demand, allowing access to a wide variety of movies including a number of 3D titles, it remains to be seen whether people will be willing to hold their phone perfectly straight in front of them to watch a feature-length film on a 4.3 inch display. It will be interesting to see how quickly this new technology is adopted. In addition to the 4.3-inch qHD 960 x 450-pixel 3D display, the HTC Evo 3D will sport two cameras: a 5 megapixel camera in the rear, and a 1.3 megapixel camera in front. Both camera's can capture 3D video and images. The HD video is captured at 720p with playback up to 1080p. The ability to capture 3D images and view 3D images on a single device may be particularly appealing to consumers who routinely work with 3D data. The HTC Evo 3D is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm 8660 processor and 1GB of RAM, giving it plenty of power to multi-task and run a wide variety games and apps. The phone also uses the Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" operating system. As we expect from any new smartphone, the Evo 3D is both 3G and 4G compatible, for faster download speeds. The device also comes with Wi-Fi hotspot capability (hosting up to 8 Wi-Fi-enabled devices), stereo bluetooth, and 4 GB of internal memory with a microSD Card slot providing up to 32 GB of expanded storage. The phone will be available June 24th for $199. It will come pre-loaded with 3D content to try-out, including the spider-Man: Total Mayhem 3D game demo.
