Greco-Roman Wrestling is a sport that is practiced all over the world. The Olympic Games in 1896 contested this sport, however, since 1908 competitions have been held in every version of the Summer Olympics since then. Matches take place in 3 two minute periods based on a scoring system. However a match can end early because of a pinfall. Holds below the waist are forbidden which separates this sport from Freestyle Wrestling which also takes place at the Olympics.You can't trip an opponent to take them to the ground and you can't hook or grapple their leg. The Suplex is a common Greco-Roman move which is offensively used to lift their opponent in the air then body slam then using their own weight to the mat. This is one of the six main types of wrestling as referred to by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles or FILA. Greco Roman started east of the Mediterranean Ocean. The Ancient Greeks used to live in this area.The Greeks believed that Wrestling should not only be practiced by Troops but that everyone should learn it including children. Young men were split up into groups of two and learned wrestling in Palaestra which is a Greek School that taught sports. The Greeks didn't really think of this sport as a Martial Art. They considered it more of an exercise regimen which purpose was to teach them grace and finesse. Ancient Greek Literature referred to this sport as one used by the Gods and Kings.They used Skilled Wrestlers to refer to mythical heroes of that time. In Greece it was considered an Olympic Game way back in 704 B.C. Events also took place at the Pentathalon before they took place at the Olympics. A great deal of fancy Sculptures within Greece and Rome portray pictures of Wrestlers. It was also popular around Ancient Greece among the festival times.
