Automation technologies represent a fundamental aspect of any modern industry. The major types of industrial automation solutions, such as DCS, PLC, SCADA, and MES, are used on a large-scale in process and discrete industries.DCS technologie Awhile ago, I got an email from one of the "gurus" I follow and it shocked me. The gist of it was this person wanted to trade services for a household item.To say it floored me would be an understatement. What was worse was a few days later t
The global energy focus is shifting towards generating greener and sustainable energy, with various forms of such energy sources being implemented and many more under research. One such way to do so by capturing waste or free thermal energy. An example of material capturing thermal energy is the Phase Change Material (PCM), which on melting and solidifying at a certain temperature, are capable of storing and releasing large amounts of energy.WHY PCMs?These materials store thermal energy as latent heat which allows higher materials to store higher thermal energy without any change in temperature. These materials can store natural thermal energy for facility heating and cooling needs. Another important property of these materials that is can be exploited is that these store thermal energy during off demand hours and then use the energy saved so during peak demand to save on energy cost and help stabilize grid load. Moreover, the buildings with enough available thermal mass can provide agreeable indoor climate to occupants without the need of active cooling, thus saving energy. Hence using this can reduce energy consumptions and so reduce carbon emissions. They also store thermal energy from thermal energy source or electrical energy source when available and this can be used when required. Hence these can be used in the concentrated solar plants, that work well so long as the sun is shining, but they have a hard time delivering energy at night or when the clouds roll in. So if excess heat not needed for immediate electricity generation can be stored, it can be tapped and used at a later time.TYPES AND APPLICATIONSPCMs are used in a number of ways, such as thermal energy storage whereby heat or coolness is stored from one process or period in time, and used at a later date or different location. These are also used in providing thermal barriers or insulation, for example in temperature controlled transport. Hence the applications can be divided as temperature control and storage and supply and removal of heat with minimal temperature change. There are large numbers of PCMs that melt and solidify at a wide range of temperatures, making them attractive in a number of applications. Phase change materials find their application in cold storage, temperature controlled food transportation, pharmaceutical transportation, air conditioning, solar applications, thermal wear, building cooling and heating.PCMs fall into four main categories: water-based PCMs, salt hydrates (eutectics), paraffins and vegetable-based PCMs. The most commonly used PCM is water/ice. Ice is an excellent PCM for maintaining temperatures at 0°C. PCMs are being developed for use across a broad range of temperatures, from -40°C to more than 150°C. Global Phase Change Material market is currently valued at $563.53 million in 2014 and is expected to reach $1,674.29 million by 2020 showing a compound annual growth rate of 19.9%.
