The gist of it was this person wanted to trade services for a household item.To say it floored me would be an understatement. What was worse was a few days later t
Recently, the Civil Aviation minister P Ashok Gajapati Raju on Saturday inaugurated Visakhapatnam’s first automation initiative of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) at Indian Oil Fuel Station of G Ramayya and Sons in the city. The focus of this initiative of bringing about complete automation of IOCL is to maximize customer transparency and satisfaction in the retail outlet operations. The plan is to mechanize the petrol pump operation starting from the unloading of products to nozzle delivery of the customers’ vehicles.Visakhapatnam will soon be one of the smart cities in the country, given the rate at which developments are taking place in this particular part of automation. Through this automation initiative, one can ensure that the customers get their automated bill with transparent and quick service. This process will also benefit the dealers in building confidence in their customers with respect to their product, safety, management of their delivery units and other facilities such as account and transaction management.Currently, nearly twenty-three IOCL retail outlets with BS-IV product supply were in fact declared to be fully automated. The IOCL has automated more than 7,700 retail outlets across the country, during the last fiscal. Few related works are still in progress and the intention is to automate another 2,300 outlets by March 2016 at least. In Andhra Pradesh, around 286 retail outlets have been made fully automated as on Saturday. However, Visakhapatnam is still only the 36th city in the country that is fully automated. There are many retail automation related developments taking place around the country. One other similar project is the manufacturing of Electronic Cash Registers (ECR) by Hyderabad based country called ECR’s Tech. This ECR called “Bilkar” is supposed to the world’s first Cash Register with in-built GPRS and Server Cloud Technology. The product is still in its initial phase of development and it will soon be made available in the market through multiple dealer, distribution network and channel partners across India. Due to the lack of manufacturing capacity, India has long been a major importer of automation devices. India’s manufacturing potential has been under-utilized, for not having the right kind of technology at disposal. The new initiative by the Central Government called “Make In India”, is intended towards attracting potential foreign direct investments into the country in order the improve the local manufacturing of retail automation in India. As stated by S.P. Chandu who is the veteran engineer at ECRs Tech, the Electronic Cash Registers took nearly one year to be ready for use. It has been manufactured locally with the help of local resources. Most of these devices were actually being imported from China by major companies until now. These Electronic Cash Registers with GPRS feature in fact come at a price much lower than the China products. It has been noted that only 22 per cent of the Indian retail segment uses automated billing solutions. There exists a huge potential for the retail automation market in India, given the healthy growth of the Indian economy. The availability of technology at such competitive prices is definitely going to a have its share of impact on this particular market.India is one of the many countries across the globe that has started working towards incorporating retail automation in most of its major sectors.
