Awhile ago, I got an email from one of the "gurus" I follow and it shocked me. The gist of it was this person wanted to trade services for a household item.To say it floored me would be an understatement. What was worse was a few days later t Automation technologies represent a fundamental aspect of any modern industry. The major types of industrial automation solutions, such as DCS, PLC, SCADA, and MES, are used on a large-scale in process and discrete industries.DCS technologie
Recently, cyber security firm Kaspersky reported that hackers have gained access to more than 100 banks in over 30 countries from past 2 years stealing as much as $1 billion.Hackers infiltrated the bank security systems through phishing schemes. They used the surveillance systems in banks to monitor the bank and employees at work by penetrating malware. Once the criminal group which includes Europeans, Chinese and Russians became familiar with bank operations they were able to steal funds without raising suspicion, by tweaking ATMs to dispense money at specific times or to transfer money to fraudulent accounts. Millions of dollars from banks in United States, Switzerland, Japan, Russia and Netherlands have been transferred to fake accounts that were set up in other countries. Before moving on to other banks, hackers limited their scores to about $10million, which aided them to avoid detection for almost 2 years. Not only this, there have been many security breach incidents that shook the world in recent years. Some of them are:Target data breach:There were times when consumers seldom thought about the security of their debit or credit cards. But it changed when Target reported that over 40 million credit and debit card numbers were stolen during holiday shopping between November 27th and December 15th of 2013. The attack, which breached almost all stores across United States, is one of the largest data breaches in history. It is estimated that the loss incurred on Target was about $1.5 billionNeiman Marcus:A card hack at Neiman Marcus, an American luxury department store, where hackers gained access to credit and debit card information of customers who shopped between July and October of 2013. At first it was estimated over 1.1 million cards were compromised but later investigation showed that maximum of 350,000 customers were affected. It was reported only the in store payments data was breached. The hackers installed malicious software in Neiman Marcus systems that collected the payment data and card details of customers who shopped between those dates.Michaels:In January 2014, Michaels, one of the largest arts and crafts chain, reported a breach stating nearly 2.6 million cards used in payments were possibly exposed between May 2013 and January 2014. Even though the names and addresses of cardholders and PINs of ATMs were not exposed, the expiry dates were potentially compromised according to Michaels.JP Morgan Chase:In 2014, JP Morgan Chase, an American multinational financial and banking services holding company, suffered a major data breach affecting over 70million individual customers and 7 million small businesses. According to the bank, hackers were able to obtain personal information like customer name, phone numbers and addresses and no sensitive information like bank account number, Social Security numbers and passwords were compromised.Sony:Hackers laid down Sony twice in 3 years. In 2011, the personal data of more than 100 million users of Sony Online entertainment and PlayStation Network was stolen forcing Sony for a temporary shutdown of their services. The company offered discounted pricing to keep their customer base intact, which incurred a loss of about $1.7 billion. In 2014, hackers leaked 5 unreleased movies online and social security numbers of some employees. The hack compromised over 47,000 Social Security numbers, including other personal information such as names, addresses and date of births. There are many other organizations that had suffered data breaches, compromising thousands of customer's data such as Sally Beauty, 11 Casinos, Albertsons & SuperValu, UPS, Goodwill, Home Depot, Kmart and Bebe.Despite all the devastating attacks that have been reported, IT professionals believe that most of the attacks are unreported and left buried. It's unlikely that any organization reports the data breach, as it will impact the reputation of the company incurring further losses. But, hackers are getting sophisticated, lurking in the shadows unnoticed, infiltrating the security systems over a period of time. Every single CIO and CTO should have certain level of awareness on the security, the latest trends and developments in Fraud Detection Systems and should make use of new technologies like Big Data, Machine Learning and Predictive analytics for quick detection and prevention of fraudulent activities in future Article Tags: Social Security Numbers, Fraud Detection, Data Breach, Neiman Marcus, Social Security, Security Numbers
