Only recently, the Argentine football player Emanuel Ortega died of a fatal head injury after hitting a concrete wall during a game. One other similar incident was the tragic death of cricketer Phillip Hughes, who was reported to have died after being struck by the ball on the neck, where his helmet provided no protection.To minimize these very accidents, multiple technological developments have been made over the years and are now being used in creating well-designed and efficient protective gear and armors for the sport professionals. These materials have the fascinating and the most unusual property of increasing in size under impact unlike other sponges that are generally used in helmets, pads, guards, gloves, mats and barriers.What are these auxetic materials?To explain it in simple words, instead of contracting when stretched, an auxetic material actually expands in size. When compressed, the material becomes thinner.This property is also being discovered in multiple natural materials and other soft biomaterials and inorganic silicates such as cristobalite and quartz. The man-made auxetics include fibers and fabrics, honeycombs and foams, carbon fiber-reinforced composites, metals, microporous polymers and ceramics.The inspiration for the developing a material like this to provide improved impact protection equipment in sports comes from the most phenomenal natural armor, the seashell. A two two-tier layer that provides an armor protection system is found in these seashells. Nacre, also known as the mother of pearl provides high stiffness, strength and toughness, to the animal/sea animal to withstand a predator bite or rock impact on the shell surface. Nacre is also known to have an auxetic property.Another important function of sports protective equipment is to reduce the peak acceleration under impact. The auxetic foam covered by a rigid outer shell, which is similar to that of the seashells, is expected to minimize the peak acceleration by almost six times under impact, a property that can be incorporated in many sport related applications. One other upgrade that is slowly taking over this particular market is the integration of an “open-platform” airbag in a racing suit that is based on D-air technology. This new upgrade is called the D-air armor which is going to be a part of the racing suit undergarment. To give an overview on this particular undergarment, apart from this particular upgrade, the garment houses a protection system that includes a gas generator, wiring, electronics, a battery and a GPS. The invention of the D-air Air bag technology is a result of over fifteen years of research conducted by Dainese Technology Centre (D-Tec).
