Awhile ago, I got an email from one of the "gurus" I follow and it shocked me. The gist of it was this person wanted to trade services for a household item.To say it floored me would be an understatement. What was worse was a few days later t Automation technologies represent a fundamental aspect of any modern industry. The major types of industrial automation solutions, such as DCS, PLC, SCADA, and MES, are used on a large-scale in process and discrete industries.DCS technologie
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) syndrome is a clinical disorder marked by frequent pauses in breathing during sleep usually accompanied by loud snoring. The pauses cut off the oxygen supply to your body for a few seconds and halt the removal of carbon dioxide. As a result of this, your brain briefly wakes you up, re-opens the airways and re-starts the breathing. This occurs many times in the night and disturbs the normal sleeping. Due to this, during the day you may experience excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty in concentrating or headaches. The most common symptom of sleep apnea is snoring, though every person who snores does not suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Here are a few statistics regarding sleep apnea stated by Resmed, Inc.• 1 in 5 adults has mild OSA.• 1 in 15 has moderate to severe OSA.• 9% of middle of the middle aged women and 25% of middle aged men suffer from OSA.• 75% of the cases go undiagnosedThe prevalence of OSA is similar to that of asthma and diabetes. Obstructive sleep apnea can lead to cardiovascular diseases, stroke, etc. This is an alarming situation and that is the reason medical professionals are becoming aware about treating sleep apnea. Treatment of sleep apnea can in turn decrease the incidence of other diseases. The most common type of treatment for OSA is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure therapy. Most of the doctors over the globe suggest CPAP therapy for OSA patients but not many of them are following up with their patients. The duration for which the therapy should be given is still unknown. Doctors ask their patients to use the CPAP machine for their entire life. Listening to this most of the patients turn a blind eye to CPAP therapy and OSA remains untreated. Even if some patients start using the device, they stop using it after some duration of time. The device along with the mask makes it very difficult for the patient to have a good sleep. Here are some reasons why CPAP therapy fails:1. Fear of wearing the maskFirst and foremost reason is many patients have a fear in their mind while using something new, especially when it is related to medicine. Looking at the mask and the tubing the patients feel as if they are suffering from some serious disorder, hence they refuse to use the device completely.2. Difficulty in falling asleep. For the first few days of the therapy, it becomes impossible for the patient to get a sound sleep because of the high pressure and the sound made by the device. The therapy becomes irritating after some point of time and the patient stops using it eventually.3. Skin irritation and pressure soresThe therapy needs to be done for the entire night and the mask remains in contact with the skin for a long period of time. Continuous usage of mask causes irritation to skin and even rashes can be seen on the skin below the mask. Also if the mask is not of proper shape and size, the air can leak and move towards the eyes making them dry or teary.4. Feeling claustrophobicThe CPAP device and the mask make the patient confined to a specific place for long period of time. Panic attacks can be seen in the patients due to tightly fit masks.Sleeping with a mask and device for 365 nights of the year for the entire lifetime sounds scary. This thought makes the patient either ignore OSA or turn to some alternative treatment method. There are different alternatives to CPAP therapy available in the market; viz. Implants, surgery etc. FDA has recently approved the Inspire Therapy, which needs a small device to be implanted beneath the skin. The device can be controlled with the help of an external remote control and can be turned on only while sleeping. Many patients are already using this therapy and have come up with a positive feedback. Inspire Therapy sounds to be a promising alternative to CPAP therapy. There is another alternative to CPAP therapy and that is surgery. Many patients undergo surgery who wishes to end the disorder of obstructive sleep apnea once and for all.Patients suffering from OSA should start switching to alternate options. At least they can enjoy a good night sleep without the CPAP device and the scary mask.
