In the past few years, trade show display design has grown and evolved more than it has in any similar period in recent history. The advent of new showcasing technologies combined with greater computer and internet accessibility from events make today's conventions a world apart from what visitors saw even a year ago. These new features have completely changed the methodology of designing pop up displays. Now, a new set of guidelines is in place, and these guidelines often seem conflicting or strange when you think of them alongside the older rules. If you've been designing long enough to remember those rules, it's time to use these tips and release those old rules so you can more easily embrace the freedom that the new rules will bring. Tip #1: Push Yourself By Visiting Other Pop Up DisplaysThere is no better way to get a sense of what's really working and what's really used in today's convention circuit. Visiting other units - even if they're from a totally separate industry - will show you some of the most cutting edge designs that are pushing the envelope. In addition, especially if you are attending a conference for another industry, you'll be able to examine them all with unbiased eyes. You'll be able to make notes of what works and what doesn't, creating your own conventional wisdom from scratch. Getting out and exploring the different designs is key to resetting your expectations about what you will see and what works. The more exposure you have to new ideas, the more easily you'll be able to work them into your own products. You should make a habit of visiting all conventions you can reasonably attend to get a good sense of where things stand. Tip #2: Be Conscious Of Your Mental Blocks When Designing Banner StandsThe most dangerous design choices are the ones we make subconsciously. If you have thought over a design route carefully, the chances that another option might have been better are very slim. On the other hand, if you make choices based on your unconscious perception that one option or the other will be better, you may be relying on old information or old instincts. Being conscious during the design process will go a long way toward helping you incorporate novel techniques in your banner stands and pop up displays.Tip #3: Don't Be Afraid To ExperimentToday's convention design atmosphere is all about innovation to capture visual interest. Exhibitors are exploring new and different ideas while incorporating the best of what present technology has to offer. In order to accomplish this goal, designers have to be willing to step outside of their comfort zone somewhat. You have to be unafraid of experimentation. If you can feel free to try out new ideas that others arent using, you'll go from being an individual who is trying to keep up with trends to someone who is setting them - a good place to be when you're designing pop up displays. Banner stands and booths will continue to evolve as technology advances and trends develop. This is a field where constant growth is the norm, now more so than ever. Keeping up with all of these changes can be daunting, but in the end it is worthwhile for every design professional and every company that relies on trade show display marketing.
