Kristi Rifkin, a former employee of a Tennessee T-Mobile call center,is the victim of mistreatment in the workplace. At a point in her employmentwith the wireless company, she endured a difficult pregnancy. And it was atthat time when T-Mobile required shocking things from Rifkin.Her pregnancy obligated her to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated.Pregnant women tend to use the restroom more frequently anyway, but Rifkin hadto go even more often as she was drinking an increased amount of liquids. Thecompany felt that she was taking advantage of her situation and then demanded adoctors note.Even after Rifkin presented her employers with the note, they were notconvinced. She was threatened with losing her job if her bathroom breaksinterfered with her meeting quotas. She even began eating and drinking less,putting herself and her unborn child at risk to avoid the situation. Eventuallyher boss required her to clock out each time she used the restroom at work.Tennessee does not require employers to pay their employees during bathroombreaks; however, they were not requesting anyone else to clock out for therestroom, only the pregnant employee.Rifkin went on maternity leavewhen she had her baby and returned when it was required. However, a couple ofweeks after her child was born, she was fired. The company claims that she wasterminated due to a mistake that cost T-Mobile 12 cents, but it is likely that hersmall mistake was the final straw after the issues during her pregnancy.After she was terminated, severance was not provided or assistance withher medical bills. Despite all of this mistreatment, Rifkin is happy with herchild and has moved on from the situation.T-Mobile clearly disregarded the rights of its employees and behaved veryinappropriately. Though no legal action is being taken at this point, Rifkinwould be in line to file suit for discrimination.
