Elle and George had just returned from ten relaxing, sunny and breezy days in the Caribbean with their children only to find that they had come home to a steamy house. When they arrived home from the airport at eleven in the evening, Elle noticed that the house seemed a bit too warm for so late in the day. George quickly assured her that with temperatures reaching 113 degrees that day, coupled with her jet lag that she was just tired and needed to go to bed. But, really George knew that an AC repair was imminent, but all he could think about was going to sleep after a long day of traveling. But, after sleeping in until 11 am in the morning Elle woke to find that the house was chilled and comfortable. Little did she know that her husband got up very early in the morning to diagnose and fix the problem before anyone could feel the heat.At 6 am George got up hoping to beat the heat and try and get the problem under control while the temperatures were still in the nineties. George noticed that the house was already very hot and getting hotter as the minutes went by. And he knew that if he was not successful his wife would insist on calling for an ac repair straight away. But, George convinced himself that would not be necessary, he decided that he would try and fix the problem himself. So, he set out on self diagnosing the problem to try and avoid a costly visit from the ac repair man. First George thought about what he was observing from the situation, the fan came on, but the compressor did not. So, instantly George worried that he would need to replace the entire compressor. So, he began by cutting the power to the air conditioning. Then George proceeded to check the condenser unit, the furnace, and the thermostat. George was convinced that the problem lied within the condenser unit outside. After visually inspecting the unit he quickly noticed that one of the pieces on the unit was swollen like a balloon, nearly ready to pop. George was convinced he had found the culprit, but also relieved that it was not the compressor, but some other part. After researching a bit online George found that the piece he was looking at was the capacitor. And surmised that with the extreme temperatures his air conditioning was constantly running even set at 80 degrees and the capacitor had burned out because of it. So, after a few phone calls George found a place that would sell him a capacitor directly. This kind of repair usually costs about $250 for an ac repair technician to come out and do the repair. But, George got the part for $32 dollars and installed it himself in about four hours.
