MUMBAI ( INDIA): A family court of Pune ordered a warring couple to attend laughter yoga therapy classes to resolve their marriage issues. The family court Judge Swati Chauhan observed that the couple is involved in bitter divorce proceedings from the last four years, as a result, they have lost their smile, happiness, and productivity toward life. Judge Swati Chauhan explained the idea and the benefits of laughter yoga as a therapy to the couple and directed them to attend a laughter therapy workshop and sessions from a laughter expert. A typical Laughter therapy workshop is for an individual who is struggling with stress and negative emotions like anger, sadness, depression, anxiety, and grief in their lives. Keeping their ego's and argument aside, the couple agreed to undergo the unique therapy session of laughter yoga. The judge said, “This nuanced exercise may motivate the litigating parties to discard the hurt, pain, and worry and facilitate them to take an appropriate decision.” The couple is a parent to a minor child, has a typical list of allegations on each other. The court observed that this marriage dispute has increased stress, anxiety, frustration and depression between them.Various marriage counselling efforts did not succeed since the couple was not able to make any decision about their matrimonial future. Pune court Judge adopted a unique method in divorce case hearing, Judge said, “The known method of dealing with matrimonial litigation is to send the couple for marriage counselling. If there is a psychological issue, they may be referred to a psychologist. If there is an element of some amicable settlement, they may be referred for mediation” Scientific research proves that laughter reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine. Thus, it enhances positive emotions. Further, it increases well-being and helps focus on solutions and achieve more productive outcomes to problems. The court said, "they could be motivated to deal with their matrimonial issues peacefully and pragmatically through such laughter training". The judge said research claims that laughter creates an amazing connection between people, help in resolving ego issues. “Laughing together may help in removing the feeling of strangeness. Among the other benefits of laughing, the primary is a reduction in stress hormone levels and trigger for the release of good hormones, the endorphins, which produce a sense of well-being.” While laughing, Judge Swati Chauhan said “The ability to laugh or at least smile when times get tough is the best way to reduce stress. While a little stress actually helps motivate us into action and focus on the problem, laughter helps us focus on the solution.” This was one of the unique and practical judgments given by a judge in court history.
