In the survey taken this year, nearly 43 percent of ninth-graders were considered overweight or obese, based on their body mass index a calculation of body fatness, measured from a persons height and weight. This years figure is up 1.8 percent from the previous year and up more than 5 percentage points from 2007, when the district began the BMI survey. Those numbers are even higher in poor schools. At Title I high schools those that have enough low-income students to qualify for additional money and resources from the federal government more than half of the freshmen class was overweight or obese this year.
