Many times I heard about this term in newspapers, medical journals and many other avenues, but unfortunately till few days back I was completely unaware of the real information on this. Last month I was in Delhi as one of my cousins was in hospital due to non-functioning of his bone marrow. Now I was very curious to know this term and everything about it. I just opened my laptop and started searching this term online. I was amazed seeing the results I got. In the following part of this article, I am sharing my viewpoints on this topic. What is a stem cell?Wikipedia says, Stem cells are biological cells found in all multicellular organisms, that can divide and differentiate into diverse specialized cell types and can self-born to produce more stem cells. A stem cell transplant is the infusion of healthy stem cells into your body to replace damaged or diseased stem cells. This procedure is generally done when a person's bone marrow stops working or doesn't produce enough healthy stem cells. It is also done if high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy is given to treat blood disorders like leukemia, lymphoma or multiple myeloma. The single most purpose of carrying out stem cell transplant is to restore the body's supply of healthy blood-producing cells. It is also known as bone marrow transplant or an umbilical cord blood transplant, depending on the source of the stem cells. Why stem cells are so important?Stem cells are considered body's raw materials from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Under a favorable condition, these stem cells divide to form more cells, known as daughter cells. These daughter cells either become new stem cells (self-renewal) or become specialized cells (differentiation) with a more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle or bone. Stem cells are unique no other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate new cell types. As they are unique and no other can replace them, stem cell transplant comes out as the only option to doctors. The research is still on the source of stem cells as today these cells can also be taken from the umbilical cord during the baby's birth and can be used later for replacement. Now I can say I have little bit of information about such a crucial medical procedure.
