Orthodontia has been around for quite some time. And while a lot has changed over the years, from the methodology, to the applications and the materials that are used; the basic principles still apply: achieving straight teeth. Since, seeing an orthodontist is really the only way you can achieve a straight smile, many parents wonder when is the right age or time to begin treatment. This can actually vary greatly depending on who you talk to. During childhood while teeth are developing and growing, so too is the rest of the body. When a child is growing sometimes one of the fastest parts of their growth is their teeth. And, often times the teeth will grow at such a rapid rate that creates problems for the rest of the mouth. Since, a childs mouth cannot grow at a fast enough rate to accommodate all the new teeth, overcrowding and other problems begin to appear. This creates a multitude of issues ranging from permanently crooked teeth to the danger of premature tooth decay. So, that is when orthodontia plays a big role. Taking your child to see an orthodontist for treatment can guide the growth of new teeth as well as play a big role in determining facial growth. Many people disagree about when the right age is to begin treatment. Some orthodontists and dentists alike believe that the earlier the better. Meaning that early treatment will offset future costs and problems down the line. They believe that at age 5 or 6 is when a child should be seen for a consultation. But, conversely, there are other dental experts that are of the school of thought that later in childhood is better; as in age 10-12. They believe that the mouth will grow and permanent teeth will be in, and only then is the right time to address any issues. But, obviously there is a huge amount of growth happening during the time span between ages 5 and 12; not only with the teeth, but with the entire face and mouth. So which one is right?Well, it is really based on the individual, and only an orthodontist can tell the difference. If you have children whose teeth are developing normally with only some mild crowding it is safe to say you will most likely be able to put off braces for a few years until all the teeth come in. Though dentists and orthodontists do not always agree on the best age to start treatment, roughly the recommendation that a child be evaluated for orthodontic treatment as early as age 7. However, treatment may be needed much earlier if the parent or family dentist discovers a problem, such as overcrowding or an extreme over bite.
