Sometimes 'bad feet' just run in the family. So, to be honest about it, I have been struggling with my feet since puberty. From that moment on I knew that I would need to develop a very close personal relationship with my podiatrist because I would need to see him or her on a very regular basis. There are several foot issues that run in my family. We are flat footed, with bunions, ingrown toe nails, the typical corn/callus and there are a few chronic sweaters in the bunch. So, you can image that as a female I want to remedy any of these issues before they become a constant in my life. I want to wear cute shoes and be proud of my feet. As I get older, I want to be pain free too. Flat feet and bunions can worsen over time, if I don't wear the proper shoes. This is where the podiatrist comes in. Podiatrists work with patients to manage the bones, joints, nails, and infections of their feet, in order to preserve as much natural form and function of the foot from the ankle to the pinky toe. I am flat footed, which means I need arch support. But as I got older -- the most important time to listen to the doctor -- the less I wore shoes that my arch supports could fit into. Also, I have alignment issues which have brought on the progression or growth of my bunions over the years. Ingrown toe nails have pinched and swelled on and off for years as well. Needless to say, all of the above have caused me great pains, but when I finally admitted that enough was enough the doctor was ready and available with the x-rays, alignment tools, procedures, and advice to get me up walking, dancing, and worry free from one visit to the next.Due to the fact that my conditions are progressive, I have to visit a podiatrist regularly. Other people only need to take a look at this growth, that infection, or diagnose a pain or two. They are lucky. For the rest of us, podiatrists study and train in residency for approximately 11 years total, in order to understand all of the bones, joints, movements, and mishaps of the life of one's lower legs and feet. And we are grateful. Sometimes that pain, bulge, discharge, or pop requires more than a store shelf ointment, Band-Aid, or a little ice. It will always be important to get a professional opinion rather than suffer in silence, or not so silent when it hurts so badly.
