Gynecomastia is a condition in men that is characterized by breasts that are larger than they should be. When males have breasts that can be described as being overdeveloped and protrude further out from their chests than they should, usually they have this medical problem. For the males who have this condition it can be very distressing and downright embarrassing. Having male breasts that develop beyond what they are supposed to occurs in approximately 40 to 60 percent of males. Gynecomastia is believed to be linked to a hormonal imbalance. The causes of it range from an overactive thyroid gland (known as hyperthyroidism), kidney disease, liver problems or a tumor on the adrenal gland. Other possible causes include side effects from a variety of drugs such as antibiotics, antidepressants or cancer medications. Consuming too much alcohol or the use of illicit drugs can also affect the way hormones are naturally geared to work. Please note that obese men often have breasts that look larger but this is not the same thing. For obese men this is termed pseudogynecomastia. When a man suffers from gynecomastia his breasts may be big and in some instances they may sag and the nipples may appear puffy in appearance. Not only can this make a boy or man self conscious about how his chest looks but it can sometimes be physically uncomfortable. The best way to improve upon this condition is to have male breast reduction surgery performed. This is a form of liposuction that removes the excess fat that contributes to the look of female breasts in males. Having this procedure done can make a man feel better about how he looks. It can also rid him of the physical discomfort that sometimes accompanies this problem. A patient who has gynecomastia should consult with a plastic surgeon to find out whether a reduction procedure for the breasts is in his best interest or not. There are different techniques that the surgeon may use to perform the procedure if the individual decides to go ahead with it. The specific condition that the person has will play a factor in the technique used as will the goals that the prospective patient has in mind for himself. This cosmetic operation is usually performed by way of general anesthesia. The surgical procedure can take anywhere from one to two hours to complete. In some instances it may take closer to three hours. No two patients are the exact same which is why the surgeon does not know for a certainty how long it will take until the surgery has gotten underway. If excessive fatty tissue is to blame for the condition that exists then the doctor will do liposuction. Small incisions will be made around the areola edge (which is to say the region circling the nipple) or they will be made under the arm. From there the excess levels of fat can be removed from the body. If there is too much glandular tissue that is causing gynecomastia then this will have to be cut away. For patients who have a large percentage of fat or glandular tissue a form of a breast lift may also need to be done in order to form the new flatter and firmer breast.
