Breast augmentation is an enhancement procedure that many surgeons do on the chest of the patient to improve the appearance and size. Most, if not all cases of this form of plastic surgery, use implants to achieve its goal. These implants are placed in strategic places recommended by the surgeon and agreed upon by the patient before the surgery itself. An implant is a sac made from a substance that is easily acceptable by the persons body. This sac is filled with a substance, usually either silicone of saline, depending on the preferences of the individual. Either has different advantages and disadvantages which the doctor will have to point out to the patient and the patient has to weigh these. During the operation, the surgeon makes inconspicuous incisions which will, hopefully, be unnoticeable in the future. These incisions are where the implants are inserted but they do not necessary mean that these are the places where they will stay. Some incisions are made in the armpits, others in the vicinity of the bellybutton and some closer to the breasts.DisadvantagesThere are immediate and long term disadvantages to getting breast augmentation. These do not happen to all the individuals who undergo the procedure but only to a certain few who are more susceptible to them. The immediate disadvantages or risks that usually accompany the operation have something to do with the bodys reaction to the operation itself. Allergic or adverse reactions are big possibilities that can occur during the procedure. Shock can also happen during the procedure itself but these are usually manageable.Long term disadvantages are usually connected to the implants which are placed in the body. Since the sacs are foreign objects, it is possible that the body might reject these and form scars inside the body which can make the breasts feel harder than normal. There is little that can be done when these scars form. Some surgeons recommend another operation to cut these out but their recurrence is highly possible. These scars take some time to form so the woman may not notice them immediately since they form slowly or at a gradual rate. Another long term disadvantage that can happen after the breast augmentation is leaking and deflation of the implants. This usually happens several years after the operation. The rate of deflation or the leaking is dependent on what filler is used in the sac. Saline filled sacs usually deflate faster than silicone filled ones and is easily detectable due to the loss of balance and size in the chest. Silicone deflates slowly and can cause other complications due to the fact that it is an alien substance in the human body. The implants can also mask the growth of cancer in the region. Some surgeons recommend that patient have their implants changed or reviewed after several years in order to prevent leaking after a prescribed period of time and to check for growths in the area. Mammograms can only do so much in detecting what may be covered or what is under the sacs.
