Premature ejaculation has been thought of as a sexual dysfunction problem for several decades, though it was not one that many men cared to own up to. Prior to the 1970s, very few studies were conducted into it and treatment generally consisted of a several year long program of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy that werent too terribly effective. However, in many parts of the world, successful combat with premature ejaculation has been waged, generally through the use of herbal remedies. This has been especially prevalent in the East; although Native Americans had their own herbs for tackling sexual dysfunction problems, as did knowledgeable healers in Brazil. Prior to very recent days, most men did not discuss their bedroom problems-it was considered taboo, embarrassing, and unmanly to discuss things such as premature ejaculation, although certainly the problem is nothing new. Even today, most men will not own up to having a sexual problem and it usually takes a combination of pressure from a partner and their own worries to get a muttered confession to a doctor. However, studies have been done on premature ejaculation and what to do about it since the 1940s or so. One of the more famous studies and research into treatments was done by the Masters and Johnson research team who focused on sexual responses and arousal in men and women and this would lead to the work done on the different points of sexual arousal which would lead the way to many works on premature ejaculation, among other sexual dysfunction problems. Masters and Johnson also created an intensive program for tackling sexual dysfunction problems by bringing in the couple and working with them as a whole instead of focusing only on the man. The therapy was merely talking and learning to communicate; but it had a success rate of 80% which was unprecedented for the time. The other famous study into sexology that would form a foundation for studying sexual dysfunction was the Kinsey Reports in the late 1940s. These reports mainly looked at sexuality and was the first to start classifying heterosexuals and homosexuals on a sliding scale. Although controversial, the Kinsey Reports did pave the way for more researchers to study sexology as a science in its own rights. Building on the historical foundation, researchers are now able to spend more time looking at premature ejaculation, and other sexual dysfunction, and start working on treatments for the problem. With a more relaxed attitude towards sex beginning to permeate the collective consciousness, its hoped that more men will come out and admit to the problem and then be in a better position to get help. History has helped and with help, sexual researchers will be able to continue making history in sexology and help men with their sexual dysfunctions such as premature ejaculation.
