A study at England's SouthamptonUniversity found people who adopted a vegetarian lifestyle before theyturned 30 recorded IQ scores that were on average five points higherthan when recorded ten years later.The study, which was reportedin the British Medical Journal,looked at 8,179 people who had their IQstested in 1970. Twenty years later, researchers examined the IQ scoresof the 366 participants who said they were vegetarian. Vegetarian hadan IQ score of 106, compared with 101 for non-vegetarians; while femalevegetarians averaged 104, compared with 99 for non-vegetarians.Now how is that for an interesting argument to go vegetarian!It'sbeen found that people with higher IQs are generally healthier, withlower heart disease and obesity rates. The researchers think that whilethe findings of this study are partly related to better education andhigher occupational social class, the difference in IQ is so great thatit's far more significant than just schooling and finances.The study's lead researcher was quoted as saying, "Thefinding that children with greater intelligence are more likely toreport being vegetarian as adults, together with the evidence on thepotential benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart health, may help toexplain why higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with areduced risk of coronary heart disease in adult life."In response to the study's findings, a member of the UK Vegetarian Society, said: "We'vealways known that vegetarianism is an intelligent, compassionate choicebenefiting animals, people and the environment. Now we've got thescientific evidence to prove it.
