In our society, here in America, it is almost a given that when a baby boy is born he is going to get circumcised. I dont think that parents nowadays even realize why exactly they are getting this procedure performed to their sons, except for its just the way its done or that somehow its healthier. We went on a quest to find out the cons and pros of circumcision and to clarify all the myths related to it.The first most common myth is that being circumcised drastically changes your sex life for the better. The question of whether circumcised males have more pleasure during sexual intercourse has been a hot topic over the last decades. Nobody will argue that circumcision changes the sensitivity level of the penis. The part of the foreskin that is cut during the procedure is full of nervous endings and thus there is no doubt it decreases the overall sensitivity of the penis. The problem is though that sexual sensitivity is not the same as the experience of sexual sensation. There have been a lot of studies conducted trying to research this question, but unfortunately none of them present objective results. The only way to get an unbiased picture would be to circumcise a sexually active man and have him compare his sexual sensations before and after, although even then it wouldnt be unbiased since there are so many other factors that come into play such as the partner you are having sex with, the mood you are in, your physical condition and so on. Bottom line is, it is impossible to make a conclusive decision whether the decrease of sensitivity is a side effect or a benefit for your sexual experience. The second myth is that its easier to take care of a circumcised penis and it makes it more hygienic. The truth is, it is in fact easier to take care of an uncircumcised penis. All you really need to do is wash it on a regular basis, whereas you would actually have to take extra care of a circumcised penis by wiping off the circumcision site on a daily basis to avoid forming of adhesion, as well as being cautious not to wipe fecal matter into the wound.Another myth is that circumcision prevents sexually transmitted diseases, penile cancer, and AIDS. There are indeed some studies that prove circumcision to have a very small effect on preventing AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. This preventative effect is so small however that you have a better chance of staying sexually healthy by having smart sexual practices. The same goes for penile cancer. According to some studies the risk is decreased by less than 0.01%. In reality the risks of having serious complications outweigh the positive effect on preventing penile cancer by far.The fourth myth is that circumcision is quick and painless and baby wont remember it. Circumcision takes over 10 minutes, thats not to mention that the baby stays sore for the whole time of the healing process. The initial process involves separating the foreskin form the head of the penis, which is attached to it somewhat comparable to the fingernail being attached to your finger. Babies, having never felt pain before, have a very low pain tolerance, therefore the procedure is pretty painful, even if the doctor uses anesthesia, which is not always the case. The anesthesia shot in itself is very painful, especially since it is in the groin area. There is no proof that we dont retain our childhood memories at all. Even if we dont remember what happened to us as a child on a conscious level, there are some theories suggesting that we remember everything on a subconscious level and these events shape our personalities and who we become in life. As an example of this, circumcised boys have been noticed to have stronger reactions to the pain from the shots compared to uncircumcised boys. The last myth is that circumcision is safe and harmless. In truth, there is a pretty high complication rate, which varies from 2% to 10% depending on the source. There is a risk of getting hemorrhage, which has led to infant deaths in a few cases. The leftover skin can get adhered to the head of the penis, in which case the doctor has to rip it apart, which is a very painful procedure. This actually happens in more than 50% of the cases. Circumcision can lead to ulcer formation at the urethra, which can require surgical interference. It is easy for fecal matter to get into the circumcision site and cause irritation. Many men have painful erections for the rest of their lives due to incorrectly performed circumcision. To conclude, circumcision is not known to be recommended by any medical organization in the world; quite on the contrary most medical associations are against this procedure being routine. They believe that parents should make their individual decision based on the information about the risks and advantages involved based on their own research and should not be doing it just because thats what everybody else they know has done.
