National Bike Month is here, and with it comes Tour of LongBeach. Its a chance for families to prepare together and train for a ride thatthat will include the participation of the mayor. Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster has begun his training andencourages families to do so as well. He biked to work on Wednesday. There aremany ways a person can exercise, but bicycling is the mayors choice. Toprepare for the event, the mayor makes an attempt to ride approximately 100miles weekly. A person must put in thework to get fit and stay fit. This is cycling to work day, so we are trying todemonstrate to everyone that its a good thing to ride your bike to work,Foster said. Its better for your health, better for the environment, and an easything to do. He added that the event, scheduled for May 11, being part ofNational bicycle month works in line with their event and their aims to promotethe use of bicycles. So far, at least3,200 people have signed up to participate in this citywide fitness movement. Mayor Foster told reporters that the Tour will benefitMiller Childrens Hospital. All of the proceeds are planned to go to thepediatric oncology unit.Cyclists of all skill levels are encouraged to attend the Tourof Long Beach event, which will be held next Saturday. There are various skill rides available for thoseparticipating. They are encouraging amateur cyclists as well as bicycleenthusiasts to go to the race. Riders can choose from a 31-mile open course, a4-mile Family Fun Ride, or the 100-mile Cruz Gran Fondo ride. The longest ridewill loopthrough Long Beach then head south down the Southern California Coastthrough Sunset Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.From now until the day of the race riders who wish to trainhave the option to meet up with U.S. Olympian and professional cyclist TonyCruz. This training is aimed to help those attacking the 31-mile Tour, 62-mileMetric Century or 100-mile Cruz Gran Fondo, get started. Every Sunday nowthrough May 11 at 8am any cyclist at any level can join Tony to get conditionedfor the main event.Those wishing to participate can still register.
