Tools such as snow shovels, deicing compounds, and waterproof floor mats can make entering a home safer for both residents and guests.Inside the home, one should have supplies that include plenty of food, water and other basic supplies to last at least four days without power or outside help. Be sure to include food that does not need heating or refrigeration as it is possible to lose power. Canned soups, stews and meats, along with energy bars and cereal can meet these needs. Be sure to have a manual can opener and disposable plates and utensils. The supply should also include one gallon of water per person per day, flashlights, radio and cell phone.Prepare the car for travel in the winter by making sure it is ready for ice, snow or hazardous roads. The antifreeze should be checked before the first freeze. Older batteries should be checked and replaced if weak.
