True--there is a non-chemical natural sleep aid for children. It's true that spending time with your child before bedtime can be precious memorable moments. It's story time and they pass too fast for the next thing you know, they'll be in junior high school--too old for bed-time stories. But on the other hand, bedtime can be anxiety ridden, "Mommy, I can't sleep--tell me another story.""Daddy, I can't sleep, there are monsters in my room.""Please, please, daddy, tell me another story."{"Mommy, I don't feel like going to bed."Of course there's a whining that goes with their comments. After a while the cute whining becomes stressful and you feel that you are never going to get time for yourself. After all, after their bed-time is your time to relax and wind down from a long day. Why don't they just go off to sleep? Why do they make the evening so stressful? My son who is not twenty had sleeping difficulties when he was two years of age. Maybe in part it was from him not understanding why his mother and I weren't living together. Kids have stress too. I was honored to have bed-time as an opportunity to read a story to him and tuck him in, but then it became two, three and four stories and he still was wide awake. Since hypnosis was my profession I decided experiment. I told my son the story of Rip Van Winkle. I was pleasantly surprised to see that his eyes were closed within five minutes and they stayed closed. Since he was my captive audience I added in suggestions about him growing up to be a responsible person, loving, kind, respective of others, the planet and so on. It became his favorite story and as soon as the script was perfected I recorded it and introduced my son to the tape recorder--he was was about three years of age at the time. I'd tuck him in, give him a kiss and start the recording. Much to my pleasure, the recording worked just as well and even when it clicked off, he stayed asleep. I even started feeling a little guilty for how easy bed-time became. And whenever he did wake up in the middle of the night and come into my bedroom. I'd listen to his problem and walk him back to his bed, put on the tape and go back to bed. It always did the trick. Since that time hundreds of children have gone to sleep with the story of Rip Van Winkle and since it's been rerecorded onto cd, there's no longer a clicking noise at the end of the recording. End result. My twenty year of son is the "apple of my eye." I'm so honored to have him in my life. He's an honor student starting his junior year in college, handsome, intelligent, kind, talented, respectful of others ... He has become the living version of the suggestions given in the Rip Van Winkle recording.
