Working with the quick-drying medium of acrylic paint, the German-born artist Marianne Durach makes colorful abstractions which often suggest indiscernible figures. One sense in her work a fidelity to the origins of abstract painting, where artists literally “abstract from” landscapes or an architectural structure, preserving the formal essence of their subject while recreating its content in terms of coloration and texture. Indeed, it's Durach’s use of color that immediately leaps to the viewer’s eye, especially in the way she utilizes color to overlay a joyful, optimistic tone. 19/17 PB is one of Durach’s more figurative-seeming works. The painting features what appear to be rhythmically repeating shells-like structures that draw in the viewer’s eyes both vertically and horizontally. True to her abstract tendencies, what Durach has painted only suggests recognizable objects. The shadowy details that fill out the painting allude to a general relationship of darkness to light that can be perceived in many different contexts, under many different conditions.
