Art Golacki’s photographs, installations, and assemblages question the perception of reality and the limits of imagination and intuition. The artist aims to reposition common subjects or environments, evoking a reflective state of contemplation in which habits of labeling and patterning degrade. In Golacki’s enigmatic still lifes, man-made and organic objects are covered in black paint and arranged to mimic a classical memento mori. The process renders many objects unidentifiable, and thus visually equal, creating a primal, intuitive scene devoid of arbitrary learned judgments and categorical labels.
