The many ways in which color, texture and tone can communicate thoughts and feelings are central to Eduardo Ojeda’s art. Ranging from portraits and landscapes to purely abstract images in which subtle shifts of colors are the focus, his paintings are a distinctive combination of quietness and activity. Alternating between showing us the external world and an expressive inner universe, he deftly balances the two to powerful effect. “I don t try to represent a landscape or a figure,” he says. “I m more interested in how the mind reacts, stillness in observation, no analysis, no judging.”Ojeda brings that mix alive in a wide selection of media. He expresses himself through the fluid quality of ink on paper as well as the bold solidity of acrylics on canvas. Using brushes, knives, and his hands to apply his paints, he gives each image a strong physical presence. Influenced by such artists as Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler, he adds his own sense of sharpness and clarity, turning his work into something completely new. The artist lives and works in Mexico. The works on view present diverse and opposing perspectives on time, place, and the human condition, calling into question the arbitrary nature of boundaries. Through dynamic juxtapositions, the exhibition conjures feelings of harmony and mutual transformation despite the presence of difference.
