Ever since she saw the Venus de Milo at the age of six, Irene Shcherbakova’s love for sculpture has led her to express herself in that medium. Working in clay, bronze, plaster, and marble, she creates pieces that capture the texture and spirit of the human form. Her sculptures have both the precision of the artists she admires, such as Rodin and Michelangelo, and a thoroughly modern sense of freedom. From pieces that transform the body into an abstracted series of curves to ones in which every hair and facial gesture is rendered in detail, her work communicates a vitality that brings each subject fully alive. The spontaneity that animates Shcherbakova’s sculptures is rooted in her artistic process. “I am very quick,” she says, and she lets the internal impulse that drives her work take its own course. However, that impulse goes hand in hand with a disciplined approach to her materials, resulting in pieces that allow her to pursue her quest for beauty in all its forms. Born in Ukraine, the artist now lives and works in the Netherlands. The works on view present diverse and opposing perspectives on time, place, and the human condition, calling into question the arbitrary nature of boundaries. Through dynamic juxtapositions, the exhibition conjures feelings of harmony and mutual transformation despite the presence of difference.
