Danish painter Muggi Peters creates abstract canvases as meditative sites for prolonged contemplation in which close looking is rewarded. His richly textured oils on canvas are devoid of allusions to place or time, and therefore, they provide transportive experiences meant to quiet the chaos of modern life. Informed by artists, musicians, and politicians, MUGGI creates paintings as essential parts of daily life; their presence is intended to find balance between nature and the modern world. In his recent works, MUGGI paints highly tactile silhouettes. Where Did You Go features black and white drips and splatters reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism through which a woman’s figure emerges from the chaos as a ghostly presence. Similarly No Title is a layered composition evoking the European tradition of silhouette portraiture with a contemporary edge. Finally, At Peace is at once complex and orderly as the canvas is transformed into a site for protracted exploration and discovery. Exploding in colorful bursts or whispering in subtle monochromes, his paintings use color and composition to give rise to a sense of eternalism in which the subjectivity of experience is paramount. Taking what is specific to a natural setting—a landscape, a body of water—and showing how it impacts the flow or urban life, The New Flux makes a case that our dependency on nature is just as pervasive as our dependency on technology.
