Born in Haiti, Patricia Brintle tells the story of her native island with vivid colors and a distinctive style. “My art reflects life,” she says. “A positive life full of bright vibrant colors.” That focus on strong colors is inspired by Haiti’s brilliant sunshine. Working in acrylics on canvas and wood, Brintle uses the saturated tones acrylics provide to give each painting a sunlit presence, even when she addresses a heartbreaking subject. In both scenes of daily life and adventurous abstract images, light animates her work, giving it a delicacy that brings stained glass to mind, while remaining powerfully physical. While Brintle captures the look of Haiti’s land and people, she also emphasizes the universal aspects of each scene. This is particularly true of the people she depicts. Making them silhouettes, she lets the viewer become a part of creating each work’s meaning. “By keeping a silhouette,” she says, “it is the viewer’s choice to put a face on the person and the viewer becomes more aware of the story of the painting.” Brintle lives and works in Whitestone, NY.
