Humanity is the central element of Carmen Félix’s practice, uniting images that range from photorealistic oil paintings to contour conscious portraits in watercolor and ink. Félix cites human experiences and emotions as a primary point of inspiration, celebrating well-known figures who inspire her and others to continue striving to improve in their own lives. Her exploration of the motivational nature of celebrity seeps into the style in which she executes her portraits. In one, Pavarotti, mouth open in an eternal note, drips with watercolor as if any second he will shift to the next spot in the melody, while Baryshnikov is shadowed by tense, photorealistic oil paints. Félix ensures that each figure is best expressed in paint, deftly shifting techniques in honor of each figure.Living and working in Sinaloa, Mexico, Félix has been painting since childhood, and considers the work to be a fulfilling and essential part of life. Much like the people she paints, she herself is driven by the creative impulses that unite people world wide in the pursuit of self improvement. The show puts Japanese experiments with abstract textures in ink next to Mexican hyperrealistic oil portraits of real-life figures. There are fantastical manipulations of the female body in wood from Armenia and Indian contemplations of the infinite in acrylic. Side by side, the pieces challenge us to figure out what they have in common as much as they ask us how they are different. When artwork of this kind of range is presented altogether, an image of the state of contemporary art begins to emerge. Unbound Perspectives is essential viewing for anyone looking for a true survey of contemporary art that is far-reaching yet discerning.
