To call Iftah Geva’s works lighter than air is to highlight both their effect on the viewer and their method of construction. His sculptures seem to float, defying gravity and interacting in a powerful way with their environments. “The sculptures I create are kinetic, not stationary,” he says, “and can wander in space.” In his works, simple shapes seem to turn in upon themselves, revealing unexpected views and finding new meanings when seen from different vantage points. Their smooth surfaces combine with a feeling of movement to create a world that reflects the artist’s vision and demonstrates his skill and scientific knowledge. While Geva employs plywood in some works, the materials that exemplify his method are carbon fibers, used in the aeronautics and space industry, which are both very strong and incredibly light. That mixture lets him make pieces with a strong physicality as well as a spirituality that transcends it. With a sense of precision and purpose learned through his life experiences, the artist gives each of his pieces a distinctive focus and clarity. This exhibition covers both abstraction and figurative imagery and includes purely visual surfaces as well as more three-dimensional mixed-media pieces that resemble friezes. Several artists play with paint; it is blotted, it is thinned, it is slicked down, and dry paint is even cracked to create deep shadows. Wrapped up too in these physical manipulations is the way colors blend into one another - or don't. Elsewhere, one artist mixes acrylic with explosions of gold leaf to create a new sub-genre of painting, and another splatters thin ropes of paint in endless layers in a kind of two-dimensional scaffolding. Elemental Realms investigates the ways in which texture conveys information, emotion, and environment
