The paintings of Maria Fernandez Gold are characterized by her emphatic use of bold color and encaustic texture, which work alongside one another to produce emotional and expressionistic pieces. Most of the works shown here are part of Gold's most recent "Blooms" series, inspired by fields of flowers seen out her car window while visiting New England. Gold’s pieces typically incorporate many different types of media. However, for the "Blooms" series, she used only encaustic wax, creating impressionistic swaths of color with stamps, heat, and brushes. Many of Gold's other works, including "Old Glory," are more political in nature, drawing from her experiences living and working in Washington, DC. No matter what she paints, Gold's work is indelibly tied to her personal feminism and is drawn from a global perspective. The daughter of artists, Gold associates paintings with a sense of belonging and home, and she strives to create works that might bring people the same comfort. All ten artists featured here employ an extreme of some sort, be it tone, shape, texture – or, more frequently, a combination of several. Color is of course the main player, and the exhibition’s large range offers examples of how it is deployed to depict people, places, and ideas. We see it in bright, playful bursts, but also in more unexpected ways. In some works, the standout color is used only sparingly in the frame; in others, it serves to highlight an element of the subject matter, or even to underline the artist’s larger idea about pattern or line. With oil, pastels, and encaustic, several artists show us how a canvas can include only subtle or darker colors that nevertheless completely infuse the image. In this exhibition, techniques are taken to their limit and the curious are rewarded.
