The textured, abstract paintings of Tanja Skytte combine the streamlined aesthetics of Scandinavian design with a love of nature. Inspired by her travels–particularly by the landscape of Africa, where she lived for fifteen years–Skytte approaches each work of art as a process, experimenting with and honing various techniques until she achieves just the right character and tone in each piece. Skytte is primarily attracted to abstract art because she feels it frees her up creatively, allowing her to explore different materials and mediums and work without a pre-determined end point in mind. She thinks of her artistic process as an expedition, a journey where she learns and grows as an artist with every painting.Skytte is a native of Denmark, but traveled extensively as a child and an adult through her job with the United Nations. She currently lives in Marbella, Spain, where she and her husband own a craft furniture company. Above all, Skytte wants her paintings to be harmonious and balanced, bestowing a decorative and emotional resonance that elevates the atmosphere of any space. This small, concentrated group represents the many ways of paying attention to detail - in portraiture, in landscape, even in non-representational works. Three of the included artists are interested in setting the scene for us. One paints the terrain from a traditional distant viewpoint, but his images are gauzy and stylized: one city skyline appears as pure black on gray, looming through a fog, while another has buildings that resemble a family of brightly colored giants. The other two landscape painters give us street-level scenes, one depicting a vibrant watercolor world of sea sides and fishermen, the other offering rich, hyper realistic urban streets in oil. In both, the essence is of the moment. The exhibit’s abstract artist creates beautiful, understated textures with her acrylic, often in monotone to make the patterns sing all the more. The mixed-media portraits are premier examples of character studies: unapologetically unique women depicted in both traditional and non-traditional contexts.
