Coming into his third exhibition with Agora Gallery, Pakistani-American artist Fahim Somani introduces three-dimensional work in addition to his compelling and highly emotive abstract expressionist paintings. Using a variety of mediums, Somani creates images rich in color, with vivid brushstrokes that add texture and depth, juxtaposed by finer lines and forms that lend a sense of sophistication and grace to the overall effect. His compositions are powerful, suffusing each image with passion and emotion that connect with viewers in potent ways.Somani’s background and culture have had a major impact on his work, as he uses a wide range of art mediums to reflect the geometrical patterns that are a hallmark of Islamic art. The art of calligraphy is a major influence, adding an entirely new level of form and elegant beauty to each piece. Across his body of work, Somani achieves a fascinating blend of East and West, contemporary and tradition, creating images that “connect people of all walks of life.”Fahim Somani currently lives and works in Houston, Texas. The exhibition showcases both abstract and surreal-tinged images, with an emphasis on painting. The most striking thing about all six participants is their willingness to experiment. One artist combines frenzied splashes of paint with precise compositional elements, and executes the entire painting while suspended on a catwalk above it. Another painter depicts physical and emotional pain with slashes in the canvas itself. A mixed-media artist juxtaposes the orderliness of silky, painted writing with the primal chaos of resin, resulting in pieces of unusual visual depth. There is one purely representational artist in the exhibition, whose oils dance with such vibrant and unexpected colors that they seem to come from a brighter reality than ours. Kaleidoscope of the Mind is a beautifully candid, cohesive exhibition of the freshest ideas most skillfully brought to life.
