In acrylic and gouache or with photography, Alejandra Burguette maintains a spontaneous, painterly approach to portraiture. Each painting drips with saturated pigment, sparse in some areas and layered in others to build stylized faces. In photography, Burguette translates the segmented paint that forms each figure onto real human faces and bodies. Flowers and textiles blend and pick up on the colors of the body paint, building compositions that mix fashion and art. In Burguette’s painting and photography the colors are sometimes blended and blurred energetically across the canvas, whether it is human or paper. In other areas, large segments of pigment contrast sharply. Burguette’s creative practice and inspiration for each work runs from music through visuals to clothing design and photography, integrating a performative aspect into even the creation of each piece.Inspired by her work in performance art and opera, Mexican born artist Alejandra Burguette paints and then designs clothing based off of her paintings. Her artwork and fashion feed into each other, creating collections which she imbues with a mystical perspective. The exhibition showcases both abstract and surreal-tinged images, with an emphasis on painting. The most striking thing about all six participants is their willingness to experiment. One artist combines frenzied splashes of paint with precise compositional elements, and executes the entire painting while suspended on a catwalk above it. Another painter depicts physical and emotional pain with slashes in the canvas itself. A mixed-media artist juxtaposes the orderliness of silky, painted writing with the primal chaos of resin, resulting in pieces of unusual visual depth. There is one purely representational artist in the exhibition, whose oils dance with such vibrant and unexpected colors that they seem to come from a brighter reality than ours. Kaleidoscope of the Mind is a beautifully candid, cohesive exhibition of the freshest ideas most skillfully brought to life.
