With marker and acrylic paint, Manoushak Azad creates busy, swirling compositions. Azad suggests forms in motion with her lines, which condense, inflate, and pop like lava. Other works bring in sharper geometric elements, but regardless of the type of mark, selectively filled sections of each composition offer new points of interest in many of Azad's pieces. Even in more figurative images, the unique, scrawling mark making style remains, drawing out familiar bodily forms into a series of stylized parts. In all Azad's work, but particularly in more monochromatic images, the linear forms create a significant amount of texture and depth on their own, even before the intervention of washes of color below and between the lines. The flat, linear, unreal quality to each line is offset by tactile negative space and more physical subjects. An Iranian artist, Manoushak Azad's painting and drawing is spurred in part by her work in architecture and interior design. Simultaneously, the fluid forms that have become a standard part of her work represent her interest in more natural and interpretive subjects. Five painters, two mixed-media artists, and one photographer offer work that challenge the traditional understanding of art as a purely visual medium. No fewer than four abstract artists are featured; they share a skillful use of bold colors and large-scale shapes but each differs in the emotional appeal to viewers. These painters show us the different ways color can shoot straight past the eyes to raise hairs on the skin and cause tingles beneath it. The exhibition's representational works also aim to make the viewer experience rather than look. One artist puts realistic figures against backgrounds of bubbling, exquisite clouds of reds and blues that communicate speed and movement. Another offers sharply contrasted, multicolor portraits that convey the presence of another person. The exhibition's photography show us the world from a human's eye point of view, with no more context and no more clarity than a person walking through would possess.
