With oil on canvas, Nomi Knecht crafts images that faithfully represent elements of the everyday. In depicting carefully embellished shoes, docked boats, or casual portraits, Knecht preserves a bright and energetic palette, making every moment seem full of life. With planes of crisp pigment and subtle texture, Knecht aims to preserve and even enhance the mood of each image. She captures the essence of the moment in paint. Each image has the effect of a photograph, to preserve a point in time. However, the smooth strokes of Knecht's brush and the manner in which she builds them from memory, sketchbook, and observation add another layer to the work, of the curated spirit of the scene.Knecht builds direct images, paying particular attention to light in composing each scene. In this straightforward manner, she creates work that preserves and observes trends, past and present. This is reflected in subject matter like a selfie portrait, with the camera phone clearly reflected in the subjects sunglasses, as well as in the momentarily preserved but very likely fleeting natural scenery which she also explores. Idiosyncratic Expressions offers the entire range of observational to surreal to non-representational, in painting and sculpture. One participant offers an extreme close-up of figures and the things they leave behind – clothing, boats, flowers arranged in vases – at angles no one could achieve naturally. Another depicts pure textures floating through space in a novel three-dimensional use of paint. Still another paints scenes that can never be: a unicorn lying at a woman’s feet, or a watering hole full of animals in the middle of a city street. Though their creators come from all around the globe and all levels of artistic education, the works in this exhibition share boldness of color, subject matter, and purpose. Each artist’s perspective is unique and highly personal to their own experience.
