Serbian artist Aleksandar Buni believes that “artists have to move with the times.” Blending classic oil painting techniques with graffiti, Buni emphasizes the link between traditional and urban elements. His creative process begins by layering acrylics and oils on canvas, and then scratching or layering spray paint to produce the desired graphic effects.Buni’s architectural works take their inspiration from abandoned buildings, bridges, and stadiums, and from the geometry of crystals and their characteristic orientations. Buni is interested in vulnerability, breaking points, and the creation of new forms. Marked by crisp, clean lines or curvilinear patterns, his works range from urban cityscapes to geometric abstractions. “I aimed to echo reality,” says Buni of his earlier work, “whereas now I feel the need to deconstruct it.” He achieves this by exploring the energy and clarity present in industrial structures. Triangles act as a key shape in these constructions, where straight lines, geometric angles, and flat expanses work together like the interlocking shapes of a puzzle. The artist was born in Novi Sad, Serbia, where he continues to live and work. In the exhibition The Manifestation of Milieu, sixteen artists look beyond the individual and at the world around. Exploring context, both environmental and temporal, these artists question the form in how it may interact with its surroundings. Whether in harmonious landscapes or tumultuous abstracts, in elemental colors or stark simplicity, these artists manipulate their media in order to investigate the importance of environment, the concept of contexts, the manifestation of milieu.
