July 11, 2015 began just the same as every other mundane morning for the prisoners and staff at the Altiplano Federal Penitentiary in Mexico. That normal routine, however, was about to change for at least one prisoner. Joaquin Guzman, also know as "El Chapo", the leader of the Sinoala Drug Cartel who had been serving time since being recaptured in February of 2014. He was able to eluded authorities for thirteen years after escaping from prison the first time back in 2001. With his endless supply of money, the support of thousands of people on his payroll and a years worth of well orchestrated planning, he had other plans drawn up for that day.In the moments leading up to his escape later that July evening, he appeared to be conducting himself as normal which was captured by the surveillance camera in his cell. He briefly went over to the shower and could be seen bending over as if to clean something on the floor behind a four-foot tall privacy wall. He soon came back to his bed and switched his sandals for another pair of shoes, removed his tracking bracelet and walked back into the shower only to disappear into a three story deep one mile long tunnel and ultimately to his freedom. Authorities confirmed later that the elaborate escape tunnel contained construction tools, PVC piping, electrical lighting, wood, emergency oxygen tanks and a railway system which included a motorcycle that was modified to run on the railway tracks. So, just who is this guy anyway? Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, although a self-proclaimed farmer, made Forbes Magazine's list as one of the most powerful men in the world and also appeared on Forbes' Richest List. He was born on Christmas Day in 1954 although other accounts document his birthday as being April, 04, 1957. Even the exact birthday of this guy seems to be shrouded in mystery. Standing just five feet, six inches tall and weighing in at around 165 lbs, this shrimp of a man doesn't look like much but was apparently popular with the ladies. After all, he managed to have fathered eleven children with at least 5 different wives. Why is this guy such a wanted man? Well, at the time of his original arrest in 1993 his cartel was responsible for smuggling thousand of pounds of cocaine from Columbia, through Mexico and finally to our backyards here in the United States. His organization has since been involved in the production, smuggling and distribution of some of America's favorites such as Meth, Cocaine, Heroine and our good old stand by Marijuana. Without El Chapo, many of us wouldn't have been able to obtain decent quality drugs at such an affordable price over the last couple decades. His cartel, although positioned at the top, was in a constant struggle to maintain control over the lucrative drug trade across the Mexican and American border. Fighting between El Chapo's Sinoala Cartel and the Tijuana Cartel led by the Arellano Félix brothers had escalated through the early 1990's and between 1992 and 1993 hit an all time high of intensity. On the morning of May 24th 1993, one of the Félix brother's payrolled hit men while returning to Baja, California after an unsuccessful assassination attempt to take out El Chapo was tipped off by an informant. El Chapo was spotted in his Mercury Grand Marquis at the Guadalajara international airport waiting to catch a flight to Puerto Vallarta. Within minutes of the sighting, around twenty gunmen stormed the car in broad daylight, opening fire and riddling it with bullets. Fortunately for him, El Chapo was actually safe and sound just a short distance away relaxing in his green Buick Sedan. This was a case of mistaken identity of the worst kind. Sitting peacefully inside the Mercury Grand Marquis was actually the Cardinal and Archbishop of Guadalajara Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo, who died at the scene from fourteen gunshot wounds. A total of seven people lost their lives in the parking lot that day in just a matter of seconds. As you can imagine, this gained the outrage and attention of a lot of people including Mexico's 53rd president Carlos Salinas De Gortari who flew to Guadalajara and condemned the act, accusing the cartel's gunmen of targeting innocent civilians. Soon after, Mexico and the US drastically stepped up their efforts to bring the violence to and end by offering up a combined bounty of almost 9 million US dollars on El Chapo's head.Less than three weeks later on June 11, 1993 he was finally captured in Guatemala and soon after extradited back to Mexico where he was sentenced to 20 years hard time to be spent in a maximum security prison. His new home was Puente Grande, one of Mexico's toughest prisons, where two guards are assigned to every single prisoner according to the New York Times. Despite the intense monitoring, his stay was cut short in January 2001 after he was able to escape by hiding in a laundry cart that was loaded onto a truck which leisurely drove off into the sunset. This eight year stint in captivity had a major impact on his will to be a free man. He successfully outwitted authorities for the next thirteen years by staying two steps ahead of their best efforts to track him down and bring him to justice. Finally, in February of 2014 El Chapo's luck ran out a second time when he was peacefully recaptured by Mexican Marines in a raid on his condo in the Mexican Pacific resort town of Mazatlan. He was found sleeping with his wife by his side, an AK47 next to his bed with his body guard and two year old twin daughters in the next room. Shortly after his capture, he ended up in Altiplano Federal Penitentiary in Mexico where the extensive planning of his latest successful escape began almost immediately.Although he's been on the run for much of the last twenty plus years, he's been able to maintain his freedom for most of that time. Now with his second prison escape under his belt, I imagine he has learned a few things about avoiding the authorities. I don't think we've seen the last of this elusive king pin, but should not expect his recapture any time soon. Run El Chapo, Run!
