Rutgers University, founded in 1766, is one of the oldest colleges in the United States. This venerable institution has a distinguished, historically rich reputation in both academics and athletics. In fact, the Rutgers athletics department is famous for a number of firsts in college sports. While the school -- amongst other notable breakthroughs -- fielded the first intercollegiate baseball game (they lost 40-2), they are perhaps most famous for holding the first intercollegiate football game ever. The first intercollegiate football game certainly looked nothing like today's glitzy games played in front of millions -- in fact, at that point in time the game was closer to soccer. Nonetheless, hosting the first match between schools is a feather in the cap of Rutgers athletics, and one that will not be erased from the history books anytime soon. The game, held in 1869, pitted the Rutgers athletics program against Princeton's fledgling crew. The hometown squad took the match in a decidedly low-scoring affair, winning with a tally of 6 runs to counter Princeton's 4. The two apparent powerhouses went on to share the national title that year. The players at that point in time could not have been even remotely aware of the historical repercussions of their game. It is possible they would not even recognize the modern day incarnation of football as the same game. However, Rutgers athletics continued to expand and the university now fields teams in 30 different NCAA-sanctioned sports. The current football stadium can house over 40,000 fans of the Scarlet Knights. Unfortunately, the football program's heritage did not translate into much success, as they mostly floundered for the next century or so. In recent years, the program has begun to make up some ground toppling ranked teams, going to bowl games, and even cracking the top 25 (and top 10) a few times. No matter what the final rankings or standings say, the devoted fan base of the Scarlet Knights continues to pack the house year after year. Thanks to the efforts of the first football squad all those years ago, the sport has blossomed to unimaginable proportions and has an unrelenting hold on its place in American folklore. In college towns with even vaguely competitive programs, the hottest ticket will always be to the big game on Sunday.Considering how popular the sport has become, it is easy to forget that college football has such humble origins. The bright lights of the media now focus a little more intently on schools competing outside of the northeast. While the juggernauts of the SEC and PAC-10 might rollover the present-day Scarlet Knights in a game, none of them can compete with their history and claim to the "Birthplace of College Football."
