The objectiveThe objective of poker is pretty straight forward it is towin the pot. The pot is the money that accumulates as players who remain in thegame keep raising their bets. In most variants of poker the player with thehighest hand wins and there are two ways to win: holding the highest hand atthe end of the game, or by bluffing your opponents into folding andsubsequently taking the pot.Getting startedThe game starts with a shuffle and cut of the deck. Now eachplayer is required to ante, which is basically placing a small amount of money, usually a percentage of the minimum bet, into the pot. Poker is played withcolour chips, the colours denoting different amounts. Before the game, playersshould decide on a betting limit. This keeps the game friendly and preventspeople from gambling their cars or worse their homes.Once each player has put in an ante the game can begin. Thedealer deals clockwise and starts with the leftmost player, cards are dealtface down and one at a time for example when three players: player one receiveshis first card, then player two receives his first card, then player threereceives his first card, player one receives his second card, then player tworeceives his second card and so on.Each player looks at their cards and usually the player leftof the dealer starts. Players now have several options:Open: If no betting occurs you can open the pot by makingthe first betCheck: The checkopportunity only occurs if no player has opened the betting. It means you do notwant to open betting but at the same time do not want to quit. Now let us imagine the next player opened betting, you nowhave three choices:See: When you "see" another player you match the amountthey put in.Raise: To raise you need to put in the "see"amount plus an additional amount. In other words you increase the bet further.Fold: To fold means not bother carrying on, you place yourcards face down on the table and lose when you have put in.Betting continues and depending on the variant of poker youare playing more cards are revealed, and further rounds of betting are carriedout, at the end the player with the strongest hand wins. If the hands are equal the pot is splitbetween them. You should now have a better understanding of the basics ofpoker. You now need to decide what variant you wish to play and learn moreabout that particular game play. Remember the winning hands hierarchy is alwaysthe same, as is the terminology you have learned above. Good luck in your poker playing future.
