An allegory is a story in which a character represents an idea as well as a person. This can also be done in other forms of art, for example, painting and dancing. Father Time may appear as a character in a story or in a picture, an old man with a long gray beard, and we may read about him or see him as a person, but we know he represents the idea that everyone grows old. In dancing, a character named Death may appear as a skeleton, but we know that he represents the idea that everyone must die. The allegory that is best known in English literature is Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan, a book that has been read by millions of persons both young and old. In this book, the hero is a man named Christian, but the idea is the fact that man is always looking for goodness, and God, and is trying to be as religious as he should be. The other characters in this book stand for ideas in the same way. Another famous old English allegory, which is not very often read today but is still studied in schools, is the story of Everyman; this was usually put on as a play rather than as a story to be read. Some of the fables of Aesop and other writers may be thought of as allegories if you consider the animals to stand for ideas, for example, the fox standing for cleverness, the bee for thrift, and the owl for wisdom.
