Some forms of parent involvement with the school such as communications with school, volunteering, attending school events and parent--parent connections appeared to have little effect on student achievement, especially in high school. You are actually headed out for the dorms at your new college. How do you keep up with the mandatory accommodations, change of social environment and mindset while still conserving your composure? The answer could lie in which type of person you are and how you view college, or it can be as easy as going with the flow and keeping the beat.At the time you move into dorms, you might want to bring almost everything that you have in your room. For starters, make sure you only bring what is a requirement for college life (Laptop Computer, Alarm Clock, Schedule Planners, etc) in contrast to everything that you really want (possibly your OTHER computer, the HDTV that's plugged in to it, the electronic drum kit in your corner). This way you will have the opportunity to know your fellow students and your roommates before you open up about your total life. Since living with dorm mates can be similar to living with roommates, you want to not unveil yourself in the way that's analogous to people pulling out a credit card in public just to pay for a snack.Once you have gotten to know your peers on campus, make sure you don't spend all day in your dorm. You're in college now, so take advantage of that by joining a club or getting involved in academia with a healthy activity on or off campus that suits your interest and/or the program that you are majoring in. This is good because it combats the homesickness that can accompany dorm life as well as other composite troubles that the weary college student may run across. As soon as you are settled in your dorm, you can feel free to enhance it to your satisfaction. As a guy, I would bring posters and other varied drawings to decorate the wall with. There are many other ideas you can create such as fabrics for doors and ceilings, pictures that you collect, or any other reminders of your hobbies, virtues, and values. This can be custom tailored to your own fit or to fit others preferences, but that is completely within your control.Lastly but not the least, make certain to set up some ground rules with your roommates. Since both of you probably share various schedules then most likely this will be one of the first activities you do when moving into college. Other than that, prepare for the a good time!
