The decision to commit to a social work continuing education program, with a specialization in child welfare, is a commitment to the treatment of the mental, emotional, and physical issues that are discovered to be plaguing the quality of life for any child within the community. These cognitive, behavioral, and physical conditions are either attributed to the degree of home care or social situations that the child is not equipped to cope with and therefore overcome. It is the counselor's position to recognize the need and work with the influential people in the child's life in order to create a healthier environment. This environment should be able to, at minimum, meet their physical, mental and emotional needs on a daily basis, at home, at school, and in their surrounding neighborhood. This is only possible through recognition of need, or diagnosis. The children are unwittingly dependent upon their parents, teachers, counselors, and community leaders to recognize esteem, interpersonal, and academic issues that go far deeper than a disinterest or attitude. The significance of social work continuing education provides a great opportunity to help underprivileged children processes economic struggle, overcome abuse, and develop healthy ways to cope with emotional obstacles in their family and academic life. The unemployment or mental illness of a parent or guardian can have adverse effects on the degree of care that the children in the household are subject to receive. Therefore it is the charge of the trained and dutiful counselor to gain the child and their family's trust in order to advise them and build healthy strategies for healthier nutrition, discipline techniques, academic responsibility, and job placement as needed. Counselors will also need community support in order to make and keep any changes effective. They work with family service agencies, schools and government agencies to facilitate the recognition, diagnosis, and proactive treatment of the issues disrupting a child's physical and emotional well-being. There may be a significant presence of familial trauma, social inequities, and bullying or a combination of all three that have caused an adverse effect on the child's esteem, physical upkeep, academic performance, and mental health. They work with government agencies, school administrators and families in order to improve the child's living and academic environment. The home situation is the most influential; therefore, the individual in pursuit of a social work continuing education degree will have to complete hundreds if not thousands of hours of service within the community in order to hone the communication skills necessary to reach the individuals in groups they intend to. One has to understand the scope and influence of drugs, poverty, unemployment, and homelessness on anger, abuse, and isolation. It is the counselor's obligation to develop trust and respect with the children and their parents in order incorporate professional advice, activity and environment changes with regards to the mental health of everyone involved.
