General education has anobvious importance in today's time and a fundamental question regarding it isthat if general education deserves support in the developing world, or is itjust a luxury for the wealthy countries? The Task Force is convinced by the factgeneral education has a clear, practical impact on society, which is wellbeyond the love of learning and human development it promotes. Both industrial anddeveloping countries need capable leaders, educated citizens, and trainedworkers for betterment of industry, government and politics, and academia.Liberal education enhances the chances of an individual being able to fulfillthese roles with distinction. Presently, many developing countries are overlydependent on the industrial countries for offering a broadly based education toa few of their citizens that are richer than others. Women face specialdisadvantaged by this state of affairs with many families, especially thosebelonging to conservative societies, as they frown upon young women travelingabroad to study. General education also has aclear practical impact on a society. It can promote responsible citizenship, ethical behavior, educational ambition, professional development in a broadrange of fields, and even global integration. It prevents students frombecoming Balkanized in narrowly focused disciplines and enhances cohesionacross cohorts whose more talented and motivated students are familiarized witha core body of knowledge, some of which is unique to their own culture and someof which are universal in nature. General education alsopromotes civil society through the contribution it makes to broad-mindedness,critical thinking, and communication skills all of which are essential elementsof effective participatory democracy. It should foster tolerance and ethicalvalues, helping to encourage the social awareness and philanthropy that arevital to a society's health and stability and in the long run will make thenation and the whole mankind stronger and moiré capable.
